Francis's Story
Francis is a white broiler, that ended up becoming a pet. She was purchased from a hatchery, along with 24 other broilers, with the intent of them all going into the freezer at about 8 weeks of age. At around the fourth week, she got hurt and the others were going to peck her to death, so I moved her to a pen away from the other broilers. She couldn't walk for awhile, just barely moved, and I didn't really think she'd make it. Slowly she showed improvement and started walking and next thing I new, she started talking to me and following me when I was in her area of the barn. If any of the regular chickens, or goats, were to bother her, she'd squeek for me to help her, or come running into my foot for protection. She never really grew like the other broilers did. Needless to say, when it came time to take off the broilers, Francis stayed home. I don't know how long she'll live, since she is a broiler, but she made herself a friend and a home for however long her life may be.
Francis's short life ended 11-8-09, and I miss having her in the barnyard family.
